Mattress in a Box refers to a new model of mattress shopping that has exploded in popularity that last few years. Large numbers of Mattress in a Box companies have either formed or grown in prominence in recent years.

Typically these are companies that were formed to sell direct to consumer. They focus on online sales and marketing, sell direct without retailers or other middlemen and ship directly to the customer.

Mattress in a box companies sell mainly through ecommerce sites, ofter their own website. They may also sell through online retailers like Amazon. Many will have a showroom or two but products are fulfilled thorugh the same direct to consumer model as online sales.

These direct to consumer companies are often able to offer much greater options than a local retail store, at better prices and, sometimes, with faster delivery. 

Bed in Box is a variant of this which includes bundles of mattresses with other products that may include bed frames, mattress pads, protectors or accessories, linens, pillows, etc. They are sold and shipped in the same manner as the direct to consumer mattress sales.

Direct to consumer mattress and bedding companies will often sell at rates cheaper than retailers. They are able to do this because retailers and wholesalers mark up the products before consumers can buy them.
